Best Kitchen Faucet Buyer’s Guide
After some years of use, even the best kitchen faucets give up. This is when you are in need of a Buyer’s Guide for kitchen faucets to help you select the best one for your sink.
Before you dive into the different types, styles and finishes of kitchen faucet, just ask yourself; do I really want a new style? If you are okay with the previous faucet and you just want to replace it, you can just buy the same style from the same company.
However, if you are renovating your kitchen or you are trying to make it look different, this guide is for you. There are some specifications that you need to look at when choosing the best faucet for your kitchen.
What type do you want?
There are different types of faucets but two of them are most common; wall-mount and deck-mount. The deck-mount faucet rests on your sink and attaches to the countertop. On the other hand, wall-mount faucets hang over your sink and their attachment is through the wall.
The holes in your sink are an essential thing to look at if you want to get deck-mount faucets. These faucets fit into the holes of the sink. Traditionally, faucets required three holes and sinks would come with three holes. This style is still used today.
However, modern faucets have a one-hole installation. If you are installing a faucet for the first time in your kitchen, buy it before you buy the sink. Once you have selected your faucet, you can choose the sink with the required number of holes.
If you already have a one-hole sink and you want to install a three-hole faucet, you can drill holes into the sink. Alternatively, if there are extra holes in your sink, you can cover those using Escutcheons. These are deck plates that cover these holes so that they do not ruin the aesthetic of your sink.
What do you use the sink for?
Another thing to keep in mind is that what will you be using the faucet normally for? Are you bathing your baby in the sink? Do you have a big family and you need to wash a lot of big pots? Depending on your usage, you can choose the height of a faucet.
If you have the right faucet height, it will make working in the sink area much more comfortable. For bigger pots or more sink usage, get a faucet with a high arch.
Number of Handles
There are two handle options for faucets. You can either get a faucet with one handle which is used to control the temperature and flow.
The second option is a faucet with two handles. One side is for hot water while the other is for cold water so you can mix both waters. Then, there is a sprayer that can be pulled out or down.
Nowadays, there is a third option available; the hand-free faucet. This faucet might require touch for working but most models are motion-oriented. You can choose this option for your home if you have kids or you just want to make the sink more accessible for everyone.
Faucet Finish
The final finish of a faucet might matter to you. If it does, then you should choose a faucet that goes best with your kitchen color scheme. There are different options available:
- Stainless steel
- Nickel
- Bronze
Installation Type
There are two main installation types; bottom-mount and top-mount. The faucets that require top-mount installation need to be attached by screwing the bottom of the faucet. On the other hand, the bottom-mount faucets need to be screwed through the top.
The installation type can affect you largely if you are going to install the kitchen faucet on your own. However, if you are getting an expert to do it, there is not much to worry about.
Other Features
If you need additional features in your kitchen faucets, you can choose a faucet that has them. For example, some kitchen faucets a magnetic docking system. This keeps the sprayer in place.
Also, some faucets have an in-built filter. This is great if the water in your locality is hard or just unclean. You will not have to invest in a separate filter if you buy this faucet.
Some faucets also come with soap dispensers so they let the kitchen sink stay clean and clutter-free. Keep in mind that the prices will change with the increase in the number of features.
Price
Of course, the budget matters a lot. However, a good kitchen faucet will last for many years so do not hesitate if you have to spend some extra bucks on it. Look at different options and choose the one that is closest to your budget range.
At the end of the day, the choice for the right kitchen faucet lies on you. A kitchen faucet is something that you will be using on a daily basis so make sure that you choose it wisely. Hopefully, this buyer’s guide would have made the decision-making process simpler for you. Let us know your choice in the comment section below.
Frequently Asked Questions
As a homeowner, you should be very careful about the kitchen faucet that you choose. Going through frequently asked questions would help in clearing many of your concerns and queries.
Here are some commonly asked questions about kitchen faucets in terms of their installation, repairs, model types, features and other things.
How do I clean the mineral deposits off my aerator?
It is essential to clean the kitchen faucet from time to time as mineral buildup causes blockage of water and also affects its quality.
Vinegar works best as a homemade cleaner. To clean your aerator, remove it from the faucet and soak it in a mixture of vinegar and water for about 14 to 16 hours. Rinse with water.
If there are any stubborn spots or deposits on the faucet, use an old toothbrush to clean them.
What are the installation instructions for a touch faucet?
These depend on the company. When you buy a touch faucet, you will get an instructions manual with it. For the usual models, you would be able to install the kitchen faucet on your own.
However, the instructions are different and complex for the touchless faucets. So, it is best if you let someone with experience install the faucet in your kitchen.
It is important that you use the stabilization plate when installation a touch faucet. This plate improves the tactile performance of the faucet, as it is an insulator.
Is a touchless faucet better than a Touch faucet?
This is totally up to your own choice and liking. If you are concerned about germs on the spout and handles, you can get a touchless faucet. The touchless faucet also saves some degree of time in the kitchen.
A touchless faucet is also great for busy kitchens in which your hands are most likely to be unclean at most times. However, a touchless faucet costs more, too, and its installation is complicated.
For an average kitchen, a touch faucet is quite functional since it gets the job done, and there are hundreds of styles to choose from.
How do I control the water pressure and temperature on a one-handle faucet?
This differs from one company to another. But most of the time, you can control the temperature by turning the handle right and left. One side is for hot water while the other is for cold water.
For the water pressure, you have to lift the handle up. The higher it goes, the more pressure water will flow with.
How often should I clean my faucet?
This will depend on how often you use the faucet and quality of the water in your home. If you are using your faucet a lot, then you should clean it every month.
Also, hard water will leave mineral deposits in the faucet, so you will have to clean more often.
How will I know if something is wrong with the faucet cartridge?
There are a few signs of this. First of all, you will see water dripping continuously from the spout of the faucet. If you are having trouble adjusting the temperature and water is entering the wrong outlets, then this means the cartridge is not functioning properly.
What to do if my faucet is clogged?
If the faucet in your kitchen is clogged, you can fix it at home or pay an expert to do it. Clogging is mostly caused by debris or mineral build-up on the inside of the faucet.
This is why it is imperative that you clean the faucet. Otherwise, it might end up clogging and causing problems for you in the kitchen.
What could be the possible cause of low water pressure?
There are many reasons for the water pressure being low. If the faucet is blocked or clogged, the water pressure will definitely be lower. There might be a leak in the pipes, or the shut-off valve might be closed.
Why should I flush the pipes in my kitchen?
If there is sediment in the pipes, you can remove it by flushing the pipes for 20 to 30 minutes. For this, open the cold water taps in the house and let them run for half an hour.
This clears the sediment from pipes, leaving them clean and fresh.
Which faucets are the best?
Before you choose the best kitchen faucet, you should make a list of all your requirements. A faucet that fulfills those requirements and falls in your budget is the best one for you.
There are many companies such as Delta, Moen and Kraus that have a wide range of kitchen faucets for you to buy from.
Hopefully, these frequently asked questions answered your burning questions about the care and maintenance of your kitchen faucets. If you have any more questions about kitchen faucets, leave them in the comments section below.
2 Ways to Clean a Kitchen Faucet
In any household, kitchen faucets are used on a daily basis. The water that flows through the faucets causes a lime buildup in the holes. A clean kitchen faucet does not only look good, but it also keeps the water clean.
If you see fingerprints or smudges on the faucet, you can clean them using a washcloth or a sponge. But if there is a lot of mineral buildups, you need to clean the faucet thoroughly to get rid of the lime.
Sometimes, not cleaning the faucet for a long time might even compromise or obstruct the water flow.
How to Remove Basic Stains?
Since you are using it every day, the faucet can get stained with your fingers or even water. It is very easy to clean these stains as they are not persistent.
Softer Stains
To clean softer stains, wet a cloth with water and wipe the faucet clean with it. This will remove smudges from the faucet without the use of a cleaning solution.
Make sure that you dry the faucet afterward, or the water stains will be retained on it.
Harder Stains
For harder stains, use a cleaning solution. Pour a few drops of the solution on a wet rag and then use it to wipe the faucet. Windex is a suitable cleaning solution for most kitchen faucets.
If the faucet is made of iron, do not use vinegar or vinegar-based cleaner on it as the metal would rub off.
Disinfection with Vinegar
The kitchen faucet might even retain bacterial or other germs, and they can be transmitted to you through contact. So, it is imperative that you disinfect the faucet from time to time.
Make a homemade disinfectant by mixing equal quantities of water and white vinegar. Apply the solution using a cloth. Do not use a sponge as it collects germs.
Vinegar is acidic in nature, so it kills most of the bacteria. You can also use bleach for this purpose. Wear gloves on your hands to keep them safe while working with bleach. Always dry the faucet afterward to prevent any mineral build-up.
2 Ways to Remove Mineral Build-Up
There is no point in having the best kitchen faucet in your kitchen if you are not going to keep it clean. Try to clean kitchen faucet monthly or whenever you feel like the water flow is not consistent.
Method 1: Removing Mineral Deposit
There are different minerals in the water, and they will leave a different color in the faucet. Depending on the color of the deposit, you can use different homemade cleaning solutions for keeping the faucet clean.
Reddish-Brown Deposits
This deposit is due to iron, and it can be cleaned using lemon juice. Mix borax and lemon juice to form a waste. Use a rag to apply this paste to the faucet and rub off the deposit.
If you cannot find borax, mix oxalic acid in water by keeping the ratio of quantity 1:10.
Green Deposits
A green deposit on the faucet can be cleaned using ammonia. Mix water and ammonia in equal quantities. Then, use a rag for applying this mixture to the faucet. Wipe the faucet completely so that no ammonia is left.
Black/Brown Deposits
This deposit can be cleaned using the cream of tartar. Make a paste by mixing cream of tartar with hydrogen peroxide. Remove the deposit by rubbing this mixture on the faucet.
Soap Scum
If your faucet has really stubborn watermarks on it or residue of soap scum that refuses to go away, use white vinegar to clean them off. Form a paste of baking soda and white vinegar.
Apply to the faucet and let it sit for some time. Wash it off and then let the faucet dry.
Method 2: Clean the Filter
Different types of kitchen faucets have different filters in them, but they all have the same job. If the filter gets clogged, the water flow is affected. In this situation, you have to clean the filter.
There is a removable filter at the end of most kitchen faucets. Wrap a towel around it and turn a wrench clockwise to loosen the filter. Unscrew the filter using your hand, after it is loose enough.
Take the filter apart, piece by piece. Take a picture or make a video to remember how the parts were arranged so that you can put them back the same way again.
Using a toothbrush, remove the build-up from the filter. Run the filter under hot water and remove the buildup by running the toothbrush over the holes.
If you see the red build-up, this is calcium. To remove it, heat white vinegar in a pan and boil the filter in it. Then, let it stay there for an hour and wash it when it cools down.
Put the filter back in its place. Tighten it using your hand and then use a wrench in order to secure it in place. This method is slightly complicated, and you should only do this if you think you can handle it.
Hopefully, you would have gotten a gist of different ways to clean kitchen faucet. For easier spots, you can use a mild cleaning solution or vinegar, but for cleaning the mineral build-up, you might have to take the filter apart.
